Nicaragua's highly politicised supreme court (CSJ) was plunged into
crisis this week after two magistrates refused to step down following the expiry
of their five year terms on 11 April. The judges based their decisions on the
decree passed by President Daniel Ortega earlier this year, which extends the
terms of public officials in the event that congress, which is legally
authorized to make the appointments, failed to do so [WR-10-02]. With the CSJ
president now refusing to recognise the judges and congress paralysed, the
resultant chaos is a portent of what is to come, most notably in the supreme
electoral court (CSE), up for renewal in its entirety in June, with presidential
and legislative elections scheduled for next year. End of preview - This article contains approximately 380 words.
